Dans les années 1902-1903, les gens de ce territoire allaient à la messe et faisaient leurs autres pratiques religieuses soit à l’église de Saint-Étienne, de Saint-Barnabé ou de Yamachiche. C’était au temps des voitures et des traineaux avec des chevaux. Les distances étaient grandes. La solution : bâtir une église.

Le 9 janvier 1903, M. Victor Bellemare, alias Hector, faisait le don à la Corporation Épiscopale de Trois-Rivières d’un terrain situé au cinquième rang, aux jonctions des territoires des 3 paroisses. Ce terrain était sur le territoire de la Municipalité de Saint-Barnabé, Une seule condition : y construire une chapelle. Ce qui fut fait.

Le chanoine Thomas Martel de Saint-Barnabé dirigea les travaux à ses frais. La paroisse fut nommée Saint-Thomas en son honneur. Des colons anglais venue d’un petit village situé à 15 km de Cambridge nommèrent le canton Caxton.

Le 9 juillet 1903, le révérend Louis-Eugène Duguay célébrait la première messe dans la petite chapelle de la Mission nouvellement construite. Les 2 premiers servants furent Wilfrid Desaulniers et Joseph Lajoie. La messe se célébrait alors un dimanche par mois jusqu’en septembre 1904.

Saint-Thomas

Thomas est un Juif de Galilée choisi par Jésus pour être un des 12 apôtres. Il a douté de la Résurrection de Jésus-Christ. Il est mort martyr autour des années 70 en Inde. Sa fête est le 3 juillet. Son tombeau est dans la crypte de la basilique Saint-Thomas de Chennai en Inde. Il est le patron des Chrétiens qui persévèrent dans la foi. Il a été le premier à reconnaître Jésus-Ressuscité. En effet lorsqu’il a rencontré le Seigneur, celui-ci lui a dit: « Avance ton doigt ici , et vois mes mains, avance ta main, et mets-là dans mon côté: cesse d’être incrédule, sois croyant ». Et Thomas de répondre: « Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu ».

Saint-Thomas Church

On July 9, 1903, Reverend Louis-Eugène Duguay celebrated the first mass in the newly built Mission chapel. The first 2 servants were Wilfrid Desaulniers and Joseph Lajoie. Mass was celebrated one Sunday a month until September 1904.

St. Thomas

Thomas was a Jew from Galilee chosen by Jesus to be one of the 12 apostles. He doubted the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. He died a martyr around the year 70 in India. His feast day is July 3.

His tomb is in the crypt of St. Thomas Basilica in Chennai, India. He is the patron of Christians who persevere in the faith. He was the first to recognize the Resurrected Jesus. Indeed, when he met the Lord, the Lord said to him: "Put your finger here, and see my hands; move your hand forward, and put it in my side: stop doubting, and believe." And Thomas answered: "My Lord and my God."
