Nikanik: Echoes of Indian Residential Schools is a project led by Coop Nitaskinan, an Indigenous solidarity cooperative based in Shawinigan.
Recognizing both the need and desire among Quebecers to learn more about this topic, the cooperative decided to make informative, historical, and educational content on the subject accessible to the public.
The “Nikanik” exhibition, which was initially rolled out across our network of professional partners, is expanding and evolving this year to also appeal to the general public.
Since intercultural understanding comes through better knowledge of others, we wanted this 2025 update to provide you with opportunities for discovery and exchange by highlighting the places and people that contribute to Indigenous cultural richness.
Nikanik means “towards the horizon” in the Atikamekw language. We believe that our shared history should not be a source of guilt, but rather a source of responsibility as we move towards a future that we will write together.
