The first Canadian Navy uniforms were heavily inspired by those of the British Navy. They evolved over the years, gradually finding their own Canadian identity, although the basic uniform remains similar.

Sailors have two types of dress, one for the winter and one for the summer.

In addition to their utilitarian side, the uniforms distinguish low-ranking seamen from officers. This is made visible through the addition of epaulettes or designs on the sleeves, for example.
